Bartrams Garden is one of the secrets of Philadelphia. I often tell visitors that Philadelphia is a city that likes it’s secrets. It seems that the best places to eat, the most amazing theaters, the most beautiful places, are all secrets in this city. Bartrams Garden is one of those secrets. To get there, you have to drive through back roads past boarded up houses and warehouses. Then it’s a sharp left turn and down a winding road to get to this beautiful garden. Behind a line of trees there is a beautiful sanctuary filled with flowers, old buildings, and a small farm.
Philadelphia is a city that’s best enjoyed with a guide. Over the time I’ve been a photojournalist, I’ve started to just scrape the surface of the secrets here. I know a lot about this city, but I still turn corners to find secret gardens.
