It’s November 1st, the start of a new month and when all the Halloween stuff goes on glorious sale. Also, time for another Introduction post. This is the Who I Am and What I do post. You could also call it the “What the Hell are You Doing” post.
My name is J.R. Blackwell, I am a writer and photographer who lives in Philadelphia. I am married to the fantastic writer, Jared Axelrod.
I am a staff photographer for Philadelphia Weekly, where I take photos of food, events, burlesque girls, drag queens, and giraffes. One time I stayed up for 24 hours photographing the city. I found myself, at dawn on my knees before the Ben Franklin Bridge as the sun came up over the city.
When I’m not photographing for the newspaper, I photograph weddings, which is something that is not cool to love, but I love nevertheless. I also photograph authors and fantasy worlds. I hope to launch a new project next year called “In Their Own Worlds” where I photograph authors in the worlds they’ve created.
I also design games! I designed the ENnie award winning Shelter in Place, which is the zombie Apocalypse, the Kickstarter supported and fulfilled board game Velociraptor! Cannibalism! (which will be released to the public in late November) and I’m writing (actually in the editing stage now) The Ministry Protocol, a Fate-based steampunk game about secret Agents.
I adore writing fiction. I co-founded the website 356tomorrows.com and I’ve short fiction written for a number of anthologies. I’ve written a novel, but I’ve put that in a drawer and likely won’t come back to it for a few years. On to other novelistic pursuits.
Currently, I have walking pneumonia for which I am taking (Dr. Prescribed) medications which are working very nicely. I am shooting a wedding this Saturday and I hope to be at full power by then.
I run about a mile five days a week, I love chocolate, muscular women, dandy men, live music, dancing, costumes, puppets, cartoons and boots I can run in.
