Impossible, Silly and Wrong

It sounds like a cliché, but they really did laugh at us when the idea for this game came up.  How would someone make a game based around Velociraptors and Cannibalism? When we talked about making a game that was humorous, a card game that would have people laughing, there was a lot of shrugging and eyebrow raising. Who would want a card game about Velociraptors eating each other?

As it turns out, at least three hundred and eighty one people would like to take a look at that game.   It seems there are lots of people out there with a dark, fun, sense of humor.  There are hundreds of people who enjoy the ridiculous, the silly, the fun-just-for-fun.

They said that no one would support a game’s art, that we needed to cheat our artist out of funds, hire someone cheap, or design a game that didn’t require big, beautiful artwork. But it turns out that a lot of people love great artwork. That other people believe in paying an artist fairly, and creating a game that is as charming to look at as it is to play.

Anytime I’ve ever done anything worth doing in my life, I have always been confronted with people who said it was impossible, ill-advised, silly and wrong. Every time. The Yachting Club, 365 Tomorrows, Shelter in Place, Velociraptor! Cannibalism! * any success in my life was proceeded by intelligent people, often people in authority, telling me it was impossible.

If you believe in something, if you know you can make it happen, and someone, even someone respectable, tells you it can’t be done, ignore them. Just go for it. Do it. Do your thing even if people say it’s impossible. Even if people say it’s stupid. Because chances are, there are impossible people out there who believe what you believe. People who think that a club with a silly name is a fun idea, people who think that you can give the world a new piece of fiction daily, people who think that zombies never die, and people that believe in Velociraptors with monocles.

When someone tells you it can’t be done, they are often just telling you that they aren’t capable of doing it . That doesn’t mean that you can’t do it. Never let other people’s negativity or insecurity make you change course. Remember that it is your dream you are pursuing. Anything you do that is worth doing will have people on the sidelines telling you it isn’t possible. The haters are how you’ll know it’s a dream worth having.

  1. It also helps that you’re equal parts awesome, intelligent, imaginative and unstoppable; I’d estimate 100% of each. As long as you keep playing, you’ll always be winning. Ready? Go!
