Cunning Minx is one of the most common search terms people use to get to my flickr. She’s famous for her activism, her ability to organize community, and her fantastic speaking skills. I offered to photograph her when she visited Philadelphia and together we took these shots.
It turns out, as well as having her many other skills, she’s a great model. She is very comfortable in her skin, a person who lives in her body without shame, which is an extraordinary thing in a world that can be so vicious about bodies.
We talked about careers, community and photography. We had met before, but this was the first time we really got to talk. I hope we can do another shoot together in the future, though with her living across the country, I don’t know when that will happen.
One of the things that continues to honor me is that she uses my photos of her as her icons. This is one of the deepest compliments a person I’ve photographed can give me, when they use a picture I’ve taken and put it up where they talk to their friends and family. It is as if they are saying: “Yes, World, this is me. This is who I am. This is how I want you to see me.”
Every time I see her icon, I know that what we created is serving her well. For art to be used, to be loved, to be seen, this is a treasure.
