What part of yourself do you add to a picture that we do not see?

When I add something to a picture, it is for the purpose of someone seeing it – so there is nothing that I add, on purpose, to my photos that can’t be seen.

What is far, far more likely is that I take something away from my photos that I don’t want distracting from the image – like focusing on my eye, or face, or hand, or feet – rather than my whole body – or arranging the background to be just so.

Most of my self portraits I see as photos of characters I’ve developed, rather than photographs of me – so when I add something to a self portrait, it’s adding a costume or attitude or light that makes the photo more compelling, dramatic, and closer to my vision.
